War in the Middle East, Nuclear explosions in Japan, Barry O Bracketology

Now, I promised myself when I started writing this that I would not get political, but Democrat or Republican, the president taking time to chill with Andy Katz and make his NCAA tourney picks looks pretty bad globally and to our allies.  Not only did he make his men's tourney picks, but he also took time to make his picks for the WOMEN's Tournament.  This is in not a shot at women's hoops, but probably only like 200k or 300k people actually watch the the womens tournament title game.  I just cannot believe that the President could be so stupid. Our allies in Japan are on the brink of a nuclear explosion 140 miles from Tokyo where millions of people live and our president is prancing around the Oval office with Andy fricken Katz.  We are in dealing with wars in the Middle East, crazy Libyans, and Japanese nuclear catastrophe and Barry O is making a video in the Oval office for NCAA bracket predictions.  Barry has got to get his priorities straight.  W did not play golf from 2003 until the end of his presidency because as commander in chief of the armed forces he did not think it looked right for him to playing golf while people were dying for their country.  This just make Barry look so stupid.  You would think one of his advisors would say, "Ya know Barry, we know you love basketball, but maybe, just maybe this is not the time to be doing a bracketology special."
I know this is old, but it still reflects the stupidity of the situation.

  1. Disclaimer: I am a Democrat and voted for Obama…

The above being said, I have to disagree with Chet on this one. The job of the President of the United States is to promote global humanity while protecting America’s interests both at home and abroad. There is no arguing that the world faces several global crises at the time. However, I don’t see how you can say that Mr. Obama is falling short due to effort or attention. Lets look at the examples that you cited. In Japan, the President has dispatched both Navy and Marine units for the purpose of assisting in both rescue and cleanup efforts. They are at the ready to assist the Japanese… should the Japanese want their help. Furthermore, the President has committed U.S. funds to our allies in order to help them recover, despite the fact that the nation of Japan is actually relatively wealthy. As far as Libya and Egypt is concerned, the President has kept a watchful eye over the situation, while being sure to allow those countries to participate in the democratic process in a manner that they see fit. He has done all he can to ensure that those uprisings in the middle east do not affect the security of Americans, but has done so at a proper arms length. Finally regarding the economy; the President and Congress have worked tirelessly in efforts to get the American economy back on track. Some experts feel that he has done well; others disagree. However, there is no question that the problem is getting its due attention.
The difference between Obama’s filling out an NCAA bracket and W’s playing golf during a war is the American participation in one and not the other. Filling out an NCAA bracket is a tradition that millions of Americans take part in every year. Filling out his bracket on ESPN is a way for the President to connect with Americans and say “hey, things may be crazy out there, but we are still Americans and still have the right to partake in the yearly traditions that make this country great.” Obama is filling out a bracket WITH millions of other Americans and trying to remind them that it is still ok to escape for a little while, watch basketball, and have fun… Unlike a round of golf at an exclusive country club which only shows how much more elite you are compared to the rest of the world.
Things like greeting the champions of different sports leagues, throwing out first pitches at games, attending sitting in the stands at the Super Bowl are things that Presidents have done during times of war and peace. They do so in an effort to show that no matter what, we all have a right to take part in the things that make this country great. Obama just happens to be a basketball fan and is able to connect with people through that medium.
